Anti-Aging Tips for Better Skin and Health

Our daily lives are filled with ads about anti-aging this and anti-aging that. But let’s face it; no one wants to look old. Although we all age at some point, that does not mean we should neglect our skin and health. If you have reached this page, there is a good chance that you may have noticed your first few wrinkles. Maybe you have put your anti-aging skin care routine to the back of your mind for too long. Or maybe even your health. In any case, I am here to help!

How to Look Younger Than You Are

Truth be told, there are more simple and less costly ways to look younger than to get Botox or have plastic surgery. If you incorporate a few of these anti-aging habits into your daily routine, your skin will look better; and you will feel better. Let me tell you how.

1. Wash Your Face With a Mild Cleanser

Wash your face with a mild face wash. As we age, our skin becomes drier and more sensitive. So, the best type of face wash to use is one that is hydrating but does not have fragrance. And our skin tends to become less oily as we age. If you still get acne breakouts, use a gentle face wash in place of an acne cleanser. The use of an acne face wash can irritate the skin, lead to more acne break outs, and age the skin faster. So steer clear.

CeraVe is a great cleanser for your skin that won’t leave you tight and dry. It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and keep moisture in. This cleanser also has MVE technology, a slow release of ingredients that can keep the skin hydrated for up to 24 hours. As a result, your skin will be left hydrated and plump. (Would you like to try a different type of face wash? Learn all about cleansing balms here.)

Ok, just in case we forgot how to wash our face. First, you wet it with lukewarm water. Next, massage your cleanser gently all over your face. It is best not to scrub as this can irritate your skin and accelerate aging. Then, rinse well and pat your face dry. You’d be surprised at how lax people have been this past year. So, time to get back on track!

2. Add a Retinol to Your Skin Care Routine

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that is present in many over-the-counter products. If you want a more robust strength, your doctor can prescribe it for you. It works like magic to reduce wrinkles and fine lines as well as slow down aging. Since they are a cell turnover booster, they can bring out your skin’s glow. So, that means less oil and sebum and smaller pores on the skin.

If you want a product that can help with wrinkles and fine lines, this serum might be right for you. Simply put, this is an anti-aging serum that works. It is also one of my faves. Before you go to bed, apply it to your face. This will allow it to work while you sleep. The next day, your skin will look and feel great! Thank me later.

3. Wear Sunscreen to Protect Your Skin

You don’t burn your toast; why would you burn your skin. Wear sunscreen! Your skin will thank you fifteen years from now. Think of all the sunburns you will miss out on. Don’t forget the protection from skin cancer you get, too. So, wear it!

A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more will help to protect your skin from the rays. This can also help to protect your skin from age spots. Keep in mind that not all sunscreens are the same. If you want to avoid dry skin, choose a sunscreen that has hydration. You do not want one with alcohol since it can be a bit too dry for the skin.

Want to try a new one? Check out EltaMD SPF44. It has hyaluronic acid to hydrate and vitamin C ester for free radical protection. In addition, it has zinc and titanium oxides to reflect and scatter UVA and UVB rays. It’s a win-win for your skin!

Tip: Keep sunscreen close to the door or in your purse, so you will remember to apply it before going out.

4. Always Wear Sunglasses

Everyone needs protection for their eyes from the sun. But, like your skin, your eyes can also be damaged by UV rays if you spend too much time in the sun. We often squint our eyes in the sun due to the bright light. The downside to this is that it can cause crow’s feet to form. You don’t want that.

When you wear a pair of shades, you protect the skin around the eyes against UV rays. This could also prevent crow’s feet, which is a clear sign of age. Make sure you buy a pair of shades that shield you fully from UVA and UVB rays. But remember, they have to make you look good too! 🙂

5. Use a Rich Cream

Switch to a rich cream. As we age, we produce less oil and sebum. It means we will get less acne, but it can cause our skin to dry out too. And, if the skin lacks hydration, fine lines can appear. But that is easy to fix with a rich cream. When you use a rich cream, you will help to trap water on your face. Therefore, it will help pump up those fine lines on your face.

Any time you apply a face cream, make sure you use it on your neck and chest. You don’t want a taut face and a saggy neck and chest wrinkles. So, make it look good from head to toe. CeraVe is a great cream for both the face and the body. (Read my review of CeraVe here. 6. Eat Healthy Foods

Our diet plays a huge role in what happens to our skin and how we feel. So, it is essential to eat foods that nourish our skin and health. Foods that are high in sugar and carbs can break down our collagen. Opt for more protein in your diet. Fish, poultry, lean meats, and legumes are all high in protein.

A diet with foods rich in vitamin C can also help you stay young and healthy. You can get it from fruits such as plums and pineapple, to name a few. They are a great source of vitamin C. If you eat them daily, you will help to keep the doctor away.

Lycopene is a plant nutrient. And an antioxidant. It is found in tomatoes and can help to protect the skin from sunburn. You also want to eat more tomatoes if you have dark spots or sun damage from sunburns in your youth. While it will not erase current age spots, it will help to prevent more damage. 7. Consider Taking Supplements

Could a pill restore dewy skin? Maybe. Salmon, for instance, has the most amount of omega-3. As a result, it can help keep your skin moist and delay aging. If you do not eat fish, you may want to consider a fish or flaxseed supplement. It can help to keep your skin supple as it replenishes the oils that your skin loses as you age. And, since it lowers inflammation in the body, it may help keep acne in check. But, of course, it’s always best to talk to a health care expert before you take them.

8. Remove Dead Skin Cells

Our skin sheds dead cells every 30 days. This creates a new skin layer. But that process can slow down with time, which may lead to dull skin and rough patches. So, to help remove the buildup, exfoliate weekly for smooth, brighter skin.

Physical exfoliators can be a bit scratchy and cause micro-tears on the skin. That is why I prefer a chemical exfoliant like The Ordinary. This bottle packs a punch with lactic acid and HA to give you that smooth, clear skin. Pair it with your favorite cream, and you will wake up with soft, radiant skin. And the winner is…? Your skin!

9. Exercise Regularly

Exercise increases your overall health and sense of well-being, which gives you more pep in your step every day. It is one of the most important ways to keep your skin and body in good health. I think most of us would say that we work out to stay healthy, wrinkle free, and youthful.

A good work out increases blood flow to your skin. This, in turn, produces collagen, which helps to renew your skin. Thus, you will look and feel younger. It all comes down to this. Make sure you work out, take breaks when needed, and listen to your body. So, yes! Let’s go for a run. (For running tips, read here.)

10. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The easiest way to ensure your face and body are ready for the next day is to get a good night’s sleep. Plus, you’ll feel less stressed and have more energy the next day. If you get a good night’s sleep, you will be more likely to follow through with all of the other items on this list that are necessary for aging gracefully. So, there you go! Get some sleep!

The Bottom Line

We only have one skin and one body so let’s take care of it. It takes just a few minutes of your day to take good care of your skin and health. Let’s face it, we all want to age slower and be healthy. So if you follow these anti-aging tips, you will have beautiful skin and a great body. Got it? Great!

Did you learn anything new from this? Do you have any anti-aging tips to add to the list? If so, please share.
